[Top]  Introduction

nPOPuk has many features beyond the ability of the built-in Messaging program on PPC/SP devices. One is the ability to save all mail and attachments on the storage card, to save room in main memory. When using nPOPuk for email, Messaging is still useful for Text Messages and MMS. To see many of the features of nPOPuk, visit here.

[Top]  Installation

There are 3 options when installing nPOPuk on a PPC/SP device:
  1. Both the exe file and data files in main memory.
  2. Both the exe file and data files on the storage card.
  3. The exe file in main memory, and the data files on the storage card.

Option 1: This option is stable, allowing the device to be turned off and on again while nPOPuk is running. However, all mail and attachments are in main memory, which is fine if the amount of mail or size of attachments isn't too large.

Option 2: This option allows all mail and attachments to be stored on the storage card. With this option it is best to exit nPOPuk through File > Exit before turning the device off, as some devices will force nPOPuk to exit on restart, because of running from the storage card.

Option 3: This option gives the best of 1 and 2, a stable way of running nPOPuk plus all mail and attachments on the storage card. The exe file in main memory is directed to the location of the data folder on the storage card.

The following setup instructions are for a GMail account. This procedure may likely help in setting up other email accounts, using different settings.

To do at the GMail webpage:

  1. Log into your GMail account and go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  2. Under the POP Download section, select "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)."
  3. Click Save Changes.
To install with options 1 or 2:
  1. Download the appropriate nPOPuk.exe version with built-in SSL from the nPOPuk support site here.
  2. Save the nPOPuk.exe, license and readme files to an empty folder in main memory (option 1) or the storage card (option 2).
  3. If wanting a shortcut in the Start > Programs menu, using the native File Explorer, navigate to the nPOPuk.exe file. Tap and hold on the nPOPuk.exe file and then tap Copy on the menu which pops up. Go to Windows\Start Menu\Programs, then tap Menu > Edit > Paste Shortcut. This will create a shortcut for easier access to nPOPuk in the future.
  4. Run nPOPuk, by tapping the shortcut in Start Menu > Programs > nPOPuk, or tap nPOPuk.exe in the nPOPuk folder.
  5. Choose Use template, or leave unchecked to fill in settings manually.
  6. Tap OK.
  7. If filling in settings manually, continue to the next two sections of this page.
  8. If using a template, browse to the folder containing the GMail ins account settings you want to import. (the .. button goes up one level)
  9. The ins files can be downloaded from here.
  10. Highlight the .ins file wanted.
  11. Tap OK.
  12. Change the personal information as needed on the POP and SMTP tabs. The other tabs can stay as they are by default, or change what is needed.
  13. Tap OK.

To install using option 3:

  1. Download the 2-folder framework from here.
  2. Unzip the nPOPuk folder to the root of main memory. (not inside any other folder)
  3. Unzip the nPOPukData folder to the root of the storage card. (not inside any other folder)
  4. Download the appropriate nPOPuk.exe version with built-in SSL from the nPOPuk support site here.
  5. Unzip the 3 files (nPOPuk.exe, license, readme) to the nPOPuk folder in main memory.
  6. If wanting a shortcut in the Start > Programs menu, using the native File Explorer, navigate to the nPOPuk.exe file. Tap and hold on the nPOPuk.exe file and then tap Copy on the menu which pops up. Go to Windows\Start Menu\Programs, then tap Menu > Edit > Paste Shortcut. This will create a shortcut for easier access to nPOPuk in the future.
  7. Run nPOPuk, by tapping the shortcut in Start Menu > Programs > nPOPuk, or tap nPOPuk.exe in the nPOPuk folder.
  8. Follow the instructions in the above paragraph, starting with #5.
  9. If desired, place the win32 platform nPOPuk.exe version with built-in SSL from here in the nPOPukData folder on the storage card. Then the card can be removed from the PPC/SP device, inserted into a card reader on a PC, and nPOPuk.exe can be run accessing all the same mailboxes and address book. Or, the PPC/SP can be attached to a PC by USB cable, using the freeware program WM5torage to turn the storage card into an external harddrive, from here, and the nPOPuk.exe file can be run from the PC.
Tips for GMail use:

  1. File > Mailbox > Edit opens the account settings window.
  2. Go to POP tab.
    a) Account: Type any name here.
    b) POP3 server: pop.gmail.com
    c) Port: 995
    d) Username: yourusername@gmail.com
    e) Password: yourpassword
    f) APOP: leave blank
  3. SSL setup
    a) SSL Type: Auto
    b) Check mark "Verify the server certificates"
  4. Disable 'RETR' command: check mark this (important to have this check-marked)
  5. Exempt from Check All/Update All: leave blank

[Top]  SMTP settings for GMail

(Setup for other servers would be similar, with different settings.)

  1. File > Mailbox > Edit opens the account settings window.
  2. Go to SMTP tab.
    a) Name: Your personal name
    b) Address: your email address for this account
    c) SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
    d) Port: 465
  3. SMTP-AUTH setup
    a) Auth type: CRAM-MD5
    b) Check mark "Use POP3 option"
  4. SSL setup
    a) SSL Type: Auto
    b) Check mark "Verify the server certificates"
  5. POP before SMTP: leave blank
  6. Always Bcc: check mark and fill in if you want a copy of all sent mail to go to this Bcc address.
  7. Leave other tabs as default, or change settings if wanted.

[Top]  Setting other options

  1. Go to File > Global Options.
  2. Change settings as wanted in each tab.
  3. Tap OK.

  5. Or, for advanced users, on the keyboard tap Shift, then File > Global Options to open advanced global options editor. Or, in Global Options > Advanced choose Enable INI editor, then ok. Next time File > Global Options will give a coice to open the advanced editor.

[Top]  Mailbox pane

  1. To create a mailbox pane go to File > Mailbox > Mailbox pane.
  2. Pane on left shows all mailboxes. (Outbox, Accounts, Saveboxes)
  3. Tap-n-hold on pane to set the width.
  4. 50 is a good size for narrow screens. Tap OK.

[Top]  Summary of mailboxes

  1. To view a summary of mailboxes go to File > Mailbox > Summary.
  2. Mailbox names will show in the left column.
  3. The filenames for the mailboxes will show in the right column. (These are the files in the nPOPuk folder.)

[Top]  Add Accounts or Saveboxes

  1. To add an Account or Savebox go to File > Mailbox > Add.
  2. Choose to create a new Account, new Savebox, or import a Savebox.
  3. Tap OK.
  4. The new mailbox will show in the mailbox pane.

  1. To create a new message go to File > New message. (Or tap the New mail icon.)
  2. Choose the account wanted, if you have more than one account.
  3. Reply-to (Omit) means the default reply-to address will be used.
  4. Choose a different reply-to address if wanted.
  5. Fill in the To and Subject boxes.
  6. Tap Recipients to add more addresses, or change between To, Cc and Bcc.
  7. Tap Attach to add attachments.
  8. Tap OK to write message.
